A1 and A1 mini: the first layer does not stick to the plate or the print comes loose

Checked against the official documentation from Bambu Lab.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Bambu Lab · Symptoms: Does not stick to the bed, Uneven first layer (thin and thick areas) · Updated on 5 November 2026

Symptom

On the A1 or A1 mini the plastic does not stay on the plate at the start: lines drag or lift, the first layer comes out loose or the print detaches shortly after. It can fail across the whole plate or only in some areas.

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. Wrong plate type selected in Bambu Studio: the bed heats less than that plate needs and, if you print on the Textured PEI with another plate selected, the nozzle ends up too high, because with the textured plate the printer lowers it slightly after levelling.
  2. Plate not washed: dust and finger grease, which alcohol does not remove from the Textured PEI but only spreads.
  3. Old levelling data or levelling done with a dirty nozzle tip, especially after changing or replacing the plate.
  4. A material that needs glue on that plate (for example non-PLA materials on the Smooth PEI) or a bed too cold for the material.
  5. A small part with little contact area, or a tall thin one, that comes loose with fast moves.
  6. A hotend that shifts down while printing (loose heater assembly screws or a badly fastened clip): the first layer comes out squashed, wavy or with raised edges.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • In Bambu Studio, check that the selected plate type is the one fitted on the printer.
  • Wet the plate: if the water gathers into streams and droplets, it is dirty; if it forms a thin film, it is clean.
  • Check whether bed levelling is enabled when you send the print, especially if you changed the plate.
  • With the hotend below 50 °C and the printer off, try to wiggle the hotend by hand: it should not move.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Pick the right plate and filament

In Bambu Studio choose the plate type you have fitted and the profile of the filament you use: that way the bed heats to that plate's temperature and the nozzle sits at the right height.

Check: The first layer comes out squished with the lines joined.

If that does not fix it: Wash the plate (next step).

  2. Wash the plate with hot water and dish soap

Wet the plate, apply a dish soap without oils or moisturisers, scrub it with a sponge or plastic brush to reach into the texture, rinse it with warm water and dry it with paper towel. Hold it by the edges without touching the surface, and do not use acetone on the Textured PEI.

Check: Water forms a thin film on the plate and the print stays stuck.

If that does not fix it: Level the bed again (next step).

  3. Level the bed

Clear any debris from the nozzle tip and run bed levelling from the calibration menu on the screen. Keep the bed levelling option turned on when sending each print, especially after changing or replacing the plate.

Check: The first layer comes out even across the whole plate.

If that does not fix it: Adjust temperature, glue or brim (next step).

  4. Adjust temperature, glue or brim

If it still does not stick, raise the bed temperature slightly (with PLA and PETG, not too much: excess heat can clog the nozzle and cause elephant's foot). With non-PLA materials on the Smooth PEI, use Bambu Lab glue. Add a brim to small parts and supports to tall thin ones.

Check: The print stays stuck until the end.

If that does not fix it: Check that the hotend does not move (next step).

  5. Check that the hotend does not move

If the first layer is wavy, has raised edges or the nozzle rubs the plate: with the hotend below 50 °C and the printer off, tighten the heater assembly screws and check that its clip is properly fastened. Then run auto bed levelling again from Calibration.

Check: The hotend has no play and the first layer comes out even.

If that does not fix it: Contact Bambu Lab support and send them a photo or video of the first layer.

Prevention

  • Wash the plate with hot water and dish soap from time to time and do not touch the surface with your fingers.
  • Always choose in Bambu Studio the plate and filament you have fitted.
  • Keep bed levelling turned on for every print.
