A1 and A1 mini with AMS lite: won't load, won't extrude or won't pull the filament out of the toolhead

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Bambu Lab · Symptoms: The multi-material system fails (does not load, cut or jams), The printer shows an error code or message, Clogged nozzle or hotend · Updated on 9 October 2026

Symptom

With the AMS lite, the A1 or A1 mini stops when loading or changing colour with alerts such as «Unable to feed filament into the extruder», «Failed to extrude the filament», «Failed to pull out the filament from the toolhead» or «The filament location in the toolhead was not found» (codes starting with 1200, for example 1200-8006 or 1200-8007).

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. Tangled filament (knots or snags on the spool) or filament that does not arrive in time: the AMS lite pushes at most 1.2 m and, if the toolhead sensor does not detect the filament within that distance, it reports an error.
  2. The odometer in that slot's filament funnel unit is stiff, dirty or faulty: it is what confirms that the filament is moving.
  3. Broken filament in the AMS lite hub or in the toolhead sensor base, blocking the others.
  4. Clogged nozzle or extruder, or the extruder gear slipping (filament too thin or extruder assembled incorrectly).
  5. Toolhead filament sensor or its arm not springing back, or the tangle sensor giving false alarms (it shares a message with the extrusion error).
  6. Worn AMS lite hub.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • If every slot fails, look at the toolhead sensor and the hub; if only one does, look at that slot's feeder and odometer.
  • Insert filament in all four slots and pull it back and forth by hand: the failing slot should not feel much stiffer than the others.
  • Push a filament by hand up to the toolhead and check that the green dot appears on the screen; when you pull it out, the sensor arm should return by itself.
  • Enable maintenance mode (Settings → Maintenance), remove the hotend and extrude at 170 °C: if the extruder pushes fine without the hotend, the clog is in the nozzle.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Untangle and check the path

Check the spool for knots or snags and untangle it. Make sure the tubes are properly connected and free of sharp bends: the AMS lite only pushes up to 1.2 m and, if the filament does not reach the toolhead sensor within that run, the error appears.

Check: Loading reaches the toolhead without an alert.

If that does not fix it: Check the failing slot (next step).

  2. Clean the slot and test the odometer

Clear debris from that slot's feeder gears. Insert filament and move it back and forth: the odometer should turn smoothly. If it is stiff, Bambu Lab suggests lubricating or replacing it; if it turns fine but the error stays on that slot only, replace the filament funnel unit.

Check: That slot loads and extrudes like the others.

If that does not fix it: Check the hub (next step).

  3. Clean the hub and the sensor base

Switch the printer off. Release the tube by pressing the coupler on the toolhead and on the AMS lite, and push the broken piece out with a long filament. If needed, dismantle and clean the AMS lite hub and the sensor base with tweezers following the Bambu Lab guide; if the hub is badly worn, replace it.

Check: Filament from any slot passes through the hub without catching.

If that does not fix it: Check the extruder (next step).

  4. If it won't leave the toolhead or the filament isn't found

With the printer off, press the cutter down to cut the filament, hold the tension lever and pull the filament out. If it will not come out, the extruder is clogged: clean it using the A1 series extruder cleaning guide. Also check that the screw on the side of the toolhead is tight.

Check: The filament comes out and the green dot goes off without filament.

If that does not fix it: If it only slips with one particular filament, it may be too thin: change the spool.

  5. Rule out the tangle sensor

The tangle alert and the extrusion alert share a message: turn filament tangle detection off just for a test. If the errors stop, Bambu Lab recommends replacing that sensor.

Check: Loads and colour changes complete.

If that does not fix it: Turn detection back on and contact Bambu Lab support with a video of the fault.

  6. Materials poorly suited to the AMS lite

If it extrudes fine from the external spool but fails through the AMS lite, consider the material: there is more feed resistance through the AMS lite, and Bambu Lab advises against very soft materials such as TPU or easily slipping ones such as PLA Aero; print them from the external spool.

Check: From the external spool that material prints without errors.

If that does not fix it: Contact Bambu Lab support.

Prevention

  • Keep the tubes free of sharp bends and leave tangle detection switched on.
  • Clean the AMS lite hub and the feeder gears from time to time.
  • Print TPU and filaments that slip easily from the external spool.
