Bambu Lab: what an HMS code or an error code means and how to find its guide

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Bambu Lab · Symptoms: The printer shows an error code or message · Updated on 9 October 2026

Symptom

The Bambu Lab printer (or Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy) shows an alert with a code: a long one made of four blocks such as 0300-0200-0001-0007 (HMS code), or a short one such as 0300-4006 or 0700-8010 (error code shown in a pop-up). Depending on the alert type, the print carries on, pauses or stops.

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. An HMS (Health Management System) alert: the printer monitors fans, temperatures, sensors, the AMS and the lidar and gives each abnormal condition its own code.
  2. A short error code shown in a pop-up window, for example 0300-4006 (nozzle clogged), 0300-800B (cutter stuck) or 0700-8010 (AMS assist motor overloaded).
  3. The first block tells you the module: 03 motion controller, 05 main board, 07 AMS, 08 toolhead, 0C Micro Lidar, 12 AMS lite and 18 AMS HT; for the AMS, 0700 is the first unit and 0701 the second.
  4. The third block is the level: 0001 error (red, stops the job), 0002 warning (pauses until it is solved) and 0003 notification (blue, information only).
  5. HMS cannot detect everything: for example it does not see lost steps or the real reason for a clog; the code points to the symptom, not always the cause.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • Write down the full code exactly as shown or take a photo: a single different block changes the meaning.
  • Look at the alert type: red stops the job, yellow or orange pauses it until it is solved and blue is just information.
  • On the X1 and the A series, open the Assistant section on the screen and tap the message to see the details and a QR code; on the P1 the codes scroll across the home screen, so note them down or read them in Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy.
  • Look the code up on the official Bambu Lab wiki (HMS code index or error code page) and check that the page title matches your code.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Read the code on the printer or in the app

On the X1 and the A1 printers, open the Assistant on the screen and tap the message; on the P1, note the code shown on the home screen. Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy show the same alerts in the device section: tapping one opens the guide for that code.

Check: You have the full code and its guide is open.

If that does not fix it: Look the code up manually (next step).

  2. Open the official guide for the code

Scan the QR code with Bambu Handy or your phone camera, or type the code into the search box of the HMS index on the Bambu Lab wiki; short codes are on its error code page. Each code has its own page with the cause and the steps.

Check: The page you open has your exact code in its title.

If that does not fix it: Search for the alert text exactly as it appears on the screen.

  3. Follow the steps and press «Retry»

Go through the guide in order. Many AMS and toolhead alerts ask you to check something and then press «Retry» to continue; red errors must have their cause removed before another print can start.

Check: The alert disappears and the print carries on or can be started again.

If that does not fix it: If the same code keeps coming back, do not keep retrying: follow the guide for that specific part or contact Bambu Lab support with a photo of the code.

  4. Alerts that are not a fault

Some codes only inform you or ask for something: 0500-403A means the room is below 10 °C and printing and axis movement are blocked until it is warmer; 1000-C001 warns that a very hot bed can clog the nozzle and asks you to ventilate the printer; 0300-800F means the door seems to be open and the print has been paused.

Check: Once the situation is corrected (temperature, ventilation, door), the alert does not return.

If that does not fix it: If the alert stays for no clear reason, contact Bambu Lab support with a photo of the code.

  5. If it keeps happening: photo, video and logs

If an error comes back again and again, take a photo or a video of the fault and keep the printer logs: Bambu Lab support asks for them to diagnose the problem, and its wiki explains how to export them and attach them to a ticket.

Check: You have the code, the photo or video and the logs ready.

If that does not fix it: Open a ticket with Bambu Lab support giving the exact code.

Prevention

  • Keep a dated photo of every code: it makes finding the guide and explaining the fault to support easier.
  • Keep the firmware up to date: Bambu Lab releases versions with new features and fixes.
  • Read the alerts even when the print carries on: HMS reports the state of fans, sensors and the AMS before a fault gets worse.
