SV06: clogs mid-print or under-extrudes (bi-metal heat break, retraction and gear)

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Sovol · Symptoms: Clogged nozzle or hotend, Too little filament (under-extrusion), No filament comes out · Updated on 9 October 2026

Symptom

On the SV06 the print fails at a random height because filament stops coming out, or too little plastic comes out and the part has gaps.

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. Heat creeping up the bi-metal heat break: according to Sovol its heat dissipation is uneven and PLA melts in it about 10-20 °C below normal.
  2. Retraction too long for this heat break: Sovol suggests about 0.5-0.8 mm.
  3. Filament debris in the nozzle or the heat break.
  4. A loose or dirty extruder gear: the filament does not feed evenly.
  5. Badly set levelling: a nozzle too close to the bed also reduces extrusion.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • Check the retraction in your slicer profile: if it is well above 0.8 mm, it is suspect.
  • Check on the first layer whether the nozzle is too close to the bed.
  • With the printer off, take the extrusion mechanism apart and check whether the gear is dirty or loose.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Adjust retraction and temperature

Set retraction to about 0.5-0.8 mm, as Sovol advises. If it still clogs, raise the nozzle temperature by 5-10 °C. Sovol has also verified that with this heat break ordinary PLA melts and extrudes fine at 175-180 °C.

Check: The print passes the height where it used to fail without clogging.

If that does not fix it: Clean the nozzle and heat break (next step).

  2. Clean the nozzle and heat break

With the nozzle hot, clear it with the needle and push any filament left in the heat break through with the smallest wrench, as if loading filament. Careful: the nozzle is hot.

Check: New filament comes out of the nozzle continuously.

If that does not fix it: Check the gear (next step).

  3. Clean and tighten the gear

With the printer off, take the extrusion mechanism apart, clean filament debris off the gear and tighten the screw that holds it.

    Check: The filament feeds evenly.

If that does not fix it: Check levelling (next step).

  4. Restore settings and re-level

If too little plastic comes out, restore factory settings and re-level following Sovol's video.

Check: The first layer has the right thickness and the part has no gaps.

If that does not fix it: Contact Sovol support with photos of the part and the filament tip.

Prevention

  • Keep retraction short (0.5-0.8 mm, according to Sovol) with the bi-metal heat break.
  • Clean the extruder gear every now and then.
  • Re-level if you change plates or move the printer.
