Ender 3 V3 SE: noise or stuttering on the X or Y axis, from a motor or from a fan

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Creality · Symptoms: Noise or rubbing when the axes move, Loose belts, A fan does not spin or is noisy · Updated on 10 October 2026

Symptom

The Ender 3 V3 SE makes an odd noise when the X or Y axis moves, a motor makes noise while printing, an axis stutters at one spot (sometimes with a noise) or a fan does not spin or is noisy.

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. A motor cable is badly connected, at the motor or at its adapter board.
  2. A belt that is too tight or too loose.
  3. On the Y axis, an idle travel speed above 150 mm/s.
  4. Stuttering on the X axis: damaged pulleys or profile, or a loose belt.
  5. Stuttering on the Y axis: a rod bent by a knock in transit, or without grease.
  6. Fan: loose or damaged cable, something blocking the blades, a broken blade, loose screws or a cable rubbing on it.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • Tell noise from stuttering: noise is heard all through the print; stuttering appears at one particular spot and can be felt when you move the axis by hand with the motor disconnected.
  • With the printer off, unplug the motor cable of the noisy axis and move it by hand: if it still makes noise, it is the motor; if not, the cable.
  • Check the idle travel speed in the slicer.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Check the motor cable

Switch off and unplug. Check that the cable of the noisy motor is properly connected, including at its adapter board if it has one.

    Check: The noise is gone.

If that does not fix it: Do the test with the cable disconnected (next step).

  2. Motor or cable?

With the printer off, unplug the motor cable and move the noisy axis by hand: if there is noise, it is the motor; if not, the cable.

Check: You know whether the motor or the cable needs replacing.

If that does not fix it: Check the belt (next step).

  3. Adjust the belt tension

Readjust the tension of the noisy axis belt: neither too tight nor too loose.

    Check: The axis moves quietly.

If that does not fix it: Check the pulleys or the rods (next steps).

  4. X axis stuttering: pulleys and profile

Switch off, disconnect the motor and move the X axis by hand to see whether it catches. Check the X-axis pulleys and profile for damage and adjust the eccentric nut of the X-axis pulley, moving the axis back and forth to see whether it improves.

Check: The X axis moves smoothly along its whole travel.

If that does not fix it: If parts are damaged, contact Creality support.

  5. Y axis stuttering: rods

If it makes noise when you move the bed by hand with the printer off and the Y motor cable connected, that is normal: the driver chip causes it and it goes away with the printer on. If it catches, grease the Y-axis rods; if it continues, remove the rod and lay it on a flat surface to see whether it is bent.

    Check: The bed moves smoothly.

If that does not fix it: If the rod is bent, it must be replaced.

  6. Lower the idle travel speed

If the Y axis makes noise while printing, lower the idle travel speed in the slicer below 150 mm/s.

Check: The Y-axis noise is gone.

If that does not fix it: Check the Y-axis cable and belt again.

  7. Fan not spinning or noisy

Switch off and unplug. Clean the fan and remove whatever blocks the blades, tighten its screws and check that it is not broken and no cable rubs it. If it is one of the print head fans, swap the heat break fan and part cooling fan cables on the adapter board to see whether the fan or the output is faulty. Measuring its 24 V with a multimeter is only for people who can measure safely.

    Check: The fan spins quietly.

If that does not fix it: If the fault follows the fan, replace it; if it stays with the output, contact Creality support.

Prevention

  • Grease the Y-axis rods now and then.
  • Do not raise the idle travel speed above 150 mm/s.
  • Clean the fans from time to time and check that their screws are not loose.
