Bambu Lab: a clump or ball of plastic wraps the hotend (nozzle clumping) and its detection
Checked against the official documentation from Bambu Lab.
Technology: FDM · Brand: Bambu Lab · Symptoms: Blobs and zits on the surface, The printer shows an error code or message · Updated on 24 October 2026
Symptom
Plastic builds up into a clump or ball wrapping the hotend and toolhead, the printer pauses warning of possible clumping (for example, 0C00-0300-0002-001C on the P2S and H2 series), or clumping detection pauses the print when there is none.
Likely causes, from most to least likely
- The part does not stick well to the plate or has a small footprint: it comes loose, sticks to the hotend tip and plastic keeps building up on it.
- False detection: on the A1 and A1 mini, the tip touches the bed because the plate is badly placed; with camera detection, a dirty camera or glare; on the P2S, the detection position out of calibration after removing the bed.
- The hotend silicone sock missing or badly fitted: plastic grips more and detection fails more often.
Checks to tell which one it is
- Look at the nozzle from the front or from above: whether there is a clump and whether it is small or large.
- If there is no clump, check that the plate is seated properly or clean the camera lens.
- Check that the silicone sock is fitted and pushed all the way up.
Before you start
Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.
Step-by-step fix
If the clump is small
Lower the bed from the screen to make room, heat the nozzle above the filament temperature (about 230-240 °C for PLA) and remove the plastic with tweezers or a wrench, wearing heat-resistant gloves: the hotend burns.
Check: The nozzle is clean.
If that does not fix it: If it is large, follow the full cleaning (next step).
If the clump is large (X1 and P1)
Lower the bed from the screen without pressing Home (it could crash), heat the hotend a little above the filament temperature (240 °C for PLA) and wait one minute. Remove the toolhead front housing, wipe off the soft plastic with paper and, at about 130 °C, finish with tweezers without pulling the wires. Soften leftovers on the housing with a hair dryer, not too close because it deforms, clean the silicone sock and reassemble.
Check: Loading filament (Load) from the screen extrudes normally.
If that does not fix it: If it does not extrude, the nozzle is clogged: follow the unclogging guide for your model.
Improve adhesion
Wash the plate with warm water and dish soap, do not touch the surface with your fingers and, if needed, apply Bambu Lab glue before printing. Add a brim to parts with a small footprint.
Check: The part does not come loose in the first layers.
If that does not fix it: Enable clumping detection.
Enable clumping detection
On the A1 and A1 mini, in Settings › Print options on the screen (firmware 01.02.00.00 or later). On the P2S and H2 series, probing detection is «Enable clumping detection by probing» in Bambu Studio (Process › Global › Others › Advanced), off by default and set per print; it does not work when printing by object, in spiral vase mode or with TPU. The P2S and H2 series also detect clumping with the camera.
Check: The printer pauses before the clump grows.
If that does not fix it: If it pauses with no clump, check for false alarms.
False alarms
On the A1 and A1 mini, seat the plate properly: the nozzle touches it during the check. With camera detection, clean the camera lens (on the H2 series, the nozzle camera) with a lint-free cloth and alcohol, and avoid glare. On the P2S, recalibrate in Settings › Calibration › Print calibration › nozzle clumping detection calibration, especially if you removed or adjusted the bed.
Check: It stops triggering for no reason.
If that does not fix it: If it is a confirmed false alarm, you can ignore that warning while Bambu Lab improves detection.
Prevention
- Wash the plate regularly and use a brim on small-footprint parts.
- Never print without the hotend silicone sock.
- On the A1, if the part is more than 70 mm high or the finish matters, add a prime tower: each check leaves a little ooze.
