Kobra 2: auto-leveling fails with a module or abnormal leveling warning

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Anycubic · Symptoms: Unlevel or warped bed, The printer shows an error code or message, Uneven first layer (thin and thick areas) · Updated on 9 October 2026

Symptom

During auto-leveling on the Kobra 2, Kobra 2 Pro or Kobra 2 Max, the printer stops with a warning such as «Leveling is abnormal, please check whether the wiring of the calibration module or the X/Y coordinates are normal!», «The module is abnormal. Please calibrate the position of the nozzle and module» or, on the Kobra 2 Max, «Auto leveling abnormal, please check leveling sensor and wiring».

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. The nozzle is not centred over the calibration module (the offset measurement button at the back of the bed) and does not press it.
  2. Dust inside the offset measurement module forms an insulating layer on its board and causes poor contact.
  3. The module button does not press down and spring back smoothly because the screws behind the module are too tight.
  4. The calibration module cable is badly connected on the mainboard or under the bed; on the Kobra 2 Max the print head cable harness can also fail.
  5. On the Kobra 2 Max, the proximity sensor is at the wrong height relative to the nozzle, or the Z motor coupler is loose.
  6. The mainboard is faulty.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • Press the module button with your finger: it must go down and spring back without sticking.
  • Run position calibration and see whether the nozzle ends up over the centre of the module.
  • On the Kobra 2 Max, with the printer on, hold a metal open-end wrench under the proximity sensor: its blue light should come on.
  • On the Kobra 2 Max, if the error appears at a specific or random position during leveling, suspect the print head cable harness.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Check that the button springs back

Gently press the calibration module button. If it does not go down and come back up properly, slightly loosen the screws behind the module with a 2 mm Allen key until it springs back normally.

Check: The button goes down and comes back up on its own.

If that does not fix it: Calibrate the nozzle position (next step).

  2. Calibrate the nozzle position over the module

On the Kobra 2, go to Prepare → Leveling → Module calibration → Position calibration; on the Kobra 2 Pro, to Tools → Control → Module Calibration → Position Calibration. If the nozzle is not over the centre of the module, move it with the X and Y controls until it is centred, save and repeat auto-leveling.

Check: The nozzle presses the centre of the module and auto-leveling completes.

If that does not fix it: If the nozzle was already centred, check the wiring (next step).

  3. Reconnect the module cable

Switch off and unplug the printer. Remove the bottom plastic part (two screws), unplug the FAN2 fan cable from the mainboard so you can move it aside and reconnect the calibration module cable at both ends: on the mainboard and under the bed.

Check: After switching on and leveling, the warning does not return.

If that does not fix it: Clean the module (next step).

  4. Clean and readjust the offset measurement module

With the printer off, remove the PEI sheet, loosen the module screws (2 mm Allen key) and disconnect it. Open it while holding the cover, as it has two small springs inside, take out the button and the two boards and wipe the contact pins and metal parts with a lint-free cloth. Reassemble it and set the button height as Anycubic's guide describes, using an open-end wrench resting on the edge of the bed as a reference.

Check: The button springs back properly, does not rub against the wrench resting on the bed and auto-leveling completes.

If that does not fix it: On the Kobra 2 Max, check the proximity sensor (next step).

  5. Kobra 2 Max: proximity sensor, coupler and print head cables

With the printer on, hold an open-end wrench under the proximity sensor (on the right-hand side, inside the print head) and see whether its blue light comes on. Then, with the printer off and unplugged, check that when the sensor touches the wrench the nozzle also touches the bed, tighten the two Z motor coupler screws with a 2.5 mm Allen key and reconnect the print head cable harness at both ends.

Check: The blue light reacts to metal, sensor and nozzle touch at the same time and leveling completes.

If that does not fix it: If nothing fixes it, open an after-sales ticket with Anycubic describing what you have checked; their guide also includes a voltage measurement on the mainboard, only for people with electrical knowledge.

Prevention

  • Clean the offset measurement module from time to time: according to Anycubic, accumulated dust causes poor contact.
  • Do not overtighten the screws behind the module: the button must be able to spring back.
