Snapmaker 2.0: the touchscreen does not detect the 3D printing module or any toolhead

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Snapmaker · Symptoms: The printer shows an error code or message · Updated on 9 October 2026

Symptom

After swapping modules, the Snapmaker 2.0 touchscreen does not recognise the 3D printing module, or none of the toolheads (3D printing, laser or CNC). Sometimes it happens after the toolhead cable was plugged in backwards or while the machine was on, and the toolhead even started smoking.

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. The toolhead cable is damaged.
  2. The toolhead cable was plugged in backwards or plugged or unplugged with the machine on: this can damage the toolhead's internal board, the controller's communication chip or, when hot-swapped, the proximity sensor.
  3. One of the linear modules is affecting CAN communication.
  4. The controller's toolhead port is broken.
  5. The 3D printing module itself is faulty.

Checks to tell which one it is

  • Turn the machine off, replace the toolhead cable with one of the other interchangeable cables and turn it on: if the module is now detected, the cable was at fault.
  • Try the other toolheads (laser and CNC): if those are detected and the printing module is not, the module is at fault.
  • If none is detected, turn off, unplug everything from the controller except the power module and touchscreen, connect only the toolhead and turn on: if it now works, the problem is one of the linear modules.
  • If the toolhead smoked but is still detected, heat the nozzle and use Load and Unload: the gear must turn clockwise when loading and anticlockwise when unloading; if it does not turn or turns the wrong way, the controller is damaged.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Always connect with the machine off

Turn the machine off before plugging or unplugging any cable and make sure the toolhead connector goes in the right way round.

Check: When powered on, the touchscreen shows the connected module.

If that does not fix it: Try another toolhead cable (next step).

  2. Replace the toolhead cable

With the machine off, replace the toolhead cable with one of the interchangeable cables supplied with the machine and turn it on.

Check: The module is detected with the new cable: the old one was damaged.

If that does not fix it: If not, try the other toolheads to tell whether the module or the controller is at fault.

  3. Isolate CAN communication

Turn the machine off and unplug every cable from the controller except the power module and touchscreen. Connect only the toolhead and turn on. If it is not detected, turn off and try another toolhead, until all three have been tested.

Check: If the toolhead is detected with everything else unplugged, the problem lies with the linear modules: tell Snapmaker support.

If that does not fix it: If no toolhead is detected, the controller's toolhead port may be broken (next step).

  4. Try the Addon-1 port

Connect the machine to Luban over the serial port with a USB cable and send M1029 E2 (remaps the toolhead port to Addon-1) and then M500 (saves it). Turn off, plug the toolhead cable into the Addon-1 port and turn on. Note: Addon-1 only works for the 3D printing and CNC modules, not for the laser.

Check: The module works on Addon-1: the controller's toolhead port was broken.

If that does not fix it: Contact Snapmaker support with photos or videos of the tests.

  5. Damaged module or controller

If the cable and controller work with other toolheads and only the 3D printing module fails, its internal board may be damaged, especially after plugging it in backwards. If the Load and Unload test fails, the controller is damaged.

Check: You have identified which part is faulty.

If that does not fix it: Contact Snapmaker support to repair or replace the part, explaining what you have tried.

Prevention

  • Never plug or unplug toolheads or cables with the machine switched on.
  • Check the orientation of the toolhead cable connector before plugging it in.
