PETG on a smooth PEI plate: the part sticks so hard it tears pieces off the sheet
Guide based on the manufacturers' official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.
Technology: FDM · Symptoms: The print will not come off the bed · Updated on 10 October 2026
Symptom
With PETG on a smooth PEI plate, the part sticks so hard it will not come off and, when forced, takes pieces of the sheet with it, leaves lifted or marked areas on the PEI, or bubbles appear under the sheet.
Likely causes, from most to least likely
- PETG grips a clean smooth PEI surface extremely hard: Prusa explains that removing it often peels the surface off and damages the sheet for good, and Bambu Lab requires glue with anything but PLA on its smooth plate so the PEI does not tear.
- Printing without a release layer: with PETG, Prusa asks for glue stick (PVA glue) on smooth PEI or a different sheet.
- Removing it while hot or prying it off with a spatula instead of waiting for it to cool and flexing the sheet.
- A first layer squashed too much or a bed hotter than needed: Bambu Lab notes that a hotter bed means stronger adhesion, and Creality raises the Z offset by about 0.05 mm for PETG compared with PLA.
Checks to tell which one it is
- Check which plate you use and what its maker says for PETG: Prusa recommends the powder-coated textured or the satin sheet, and its material table marks when a release layer is needed.
- Inspect the sheet: scratches, lifted areas or bubbles mean it is already damaged.
- Check the profile's bed temperature and whether the first layer comes out heavily squashed.
Before you start
Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.
Step-by-step fix
Remove it without damage: cold and by flexing the sheet
Do not pry it off while hot. Let the plate cool completely, take it out of the printer and flex it a little: Prusa explains that this releases the part without spatulas or knives. Bambu Lab also asks you to let the plate cool before removing prints.
Check: The part comes off without taking the surface with it.
If that does not fix it: If it does not release, do not force it with tools: check your plate maker's instructions.
Add a release layer
Before printing PETG on smooth PEI, clean the sheet while cold and apply a thin layer of glue stick (PVA glue), ideally with the plate cold and only where the part will go (Prusa); with a brand's plates, use the glue that brand recommends. The marks left in the glue after removal are normal and go away when you wash the plate.
Check: The next part comes off by itself once cool.
If that does not fix it: Switch to a plate better suited to PETG (next step).
Use a plate suited to PETG
For PETG, Prusa highly recommends the powder-coated textured or the satin sheet, and Elegoo accepts textured or smooth PEI with its Rapid PETG but recommends glue. If you do not want to use a release layer, keep smooth PEI for PLA.
Check: PETG parts come off without damaging the surface.
If that does not fix it: Adjust the first layer and the bed (next step).
Do not over-squash the first layer
Use the profile's bed temperature (Prusa: 85 °C for the first layer and 90 °C for the rest; Elegoo: 65-75 °C for its Rapid PETG, depending on printer and plate). If the first layer is heavily squashed, raise the Z offset slightly: Creality sets it about 0.05 mm higher for PETG than for PLA and prints the first layer at 20 mm/s or less.
Check: The first layer is even and the part releases once cool.
If that does not fix it: Check the sheet's condition (next step).
Look after or replace a damaged sheet
Clean smooth PEI while cold with isopropyl alcohol of at least 90% and unscented paper towel; no skin-care products. If you see small bubbles, Prusa suggests using the other side and varying where you place parts; Bambu Lab, for its plate, laying it face down on the bed, heating it to 100 °C and letting it cool. With major damage, replace the sheet or the plate.
Check: The surface is smooth with no lifted areas.
If that does not fix it: If the sheet is badly damaged, order the spare from the plate maker.
Prevention
- Do not print PETG straight onto smooth PEI: use glue as a release layer or a textured or satin plate.
- Always remove parts cold by flexing the sheet, without spatulas.
- Clean the plate with isopropyl alcohol and do not touch the surface with your fingers.
