My Bambu printer won't read the microSD card or shows card errors

Guide based on the manufacturer's official documentation; usi3d has not yet verified it on a machine.

Technology: FDM · Brand: Bambu Lab · Symptoms: Does not read the SD card or USB drive, The printer shows an error code or message · Updated on 9 October 2026

Symptom

The printer asks for a microSD card (0500-400C) or reports that the card is write-protected (0500-4016), has damaged sectors (0500-402F), has a read/write error (0500-C010), uses an unsupported file system (0500-402E) or is out of space (0500-4015). A faulty card can even leave the screen black.

Likely causes, from most to least likely

  1. Card formatted as exFAT or another format: the printer only supports FAT32, and Windows formats cards larger than 32 GB as exFAT.
  2. Damaged or write-protected card.
  3. Card full of accumulated videos and files.
  4. Card inserted badly, or removed without ejecting it on the P1, A1 or A2L, which are not hot-swappable.
  5. A faulty card that makes the main board fail and leaves the screen black (described by Bambu Lab for the X1).

Checks to tell which one it is

  • Write down the exact alert code.
  • Check the card format on the computer.
  • If the screen stays black at power-on, try starting without the card.

Before you start

Before taking anything apart, cleaning or adjusting it, switch the printer off and unplug it, unless a step says otherwise, and do not touch the nozzle, the heater block or the bed until they have cooled down. If in any doubt about electricity, heat or moving parts, stop and ask a professional.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Eject it and insert it properly

On the P1, A1 and A2L, eject the card from Settings → SD Card → Eject before removing it. Put it back the right way round.

Check: The printer recognises the card.

If that does not fix it: Format the card (next step).

  2. Format as FAT32

Copy anything you want to keep and format the card as FAT32, preferably on the printer itself using its format option.

Check: The file system or damaged sector alert disappears.

If that does not fix it: Replace the card (step 4).

  3. Free up space

If it reports that there is no space, delete old files and videos or format the card.

Check: The job is sent without a storage alert.

If that does not fix it: Use a larger card formatted as FAT32.

  4. Replace the card

If it is write-protected, gives read/write errors or is still not recognised after formatting, replace it with another card.

Check: The new card works without alerts.

If that does not fix it: Contact Bambu Lab support.

  5. Black screen at power-on

Switch the printer off, remove the card and switch it on. If the screen lights up, switch off, put the card back and power on again to confirm whether the card was to blame.

Check: You know whether the card causes the black screen.

If that does not fix it: If it stays black without the card, the fault is electrical: contact Bambu Lab support or a professional and do not open the power supply.

Prevention

  • Keep the card in FAT32 and format it on the printer.
  • On the P1, A1 and A2L, always eject the card from the menu before removing it.
  • Delete videos and files you no longer need from time to time.
